Story

Fatepur Sikri in India was the capital of the Mughal Empire from 1571 to 1585. The Emperor Akbar took symbolic patterns from India’s religions and had them carved into stone in his massive architectural complex. Emperor Akbar wanted to create religious harmony among Hindus, Muslims, Jains, Buddhists, and Christians.

The intricate geometric patterns make the space vibrate with activity. The floral tendrils seem to curve in growth but are actually trapped in stone. Archways and brackets carry invisible loads in thick, voluptuous curves reminiscent of a traditional Indian dancer. There is a sense the entire complex is alive, each element holding grace, beauty, and power.

The Fatepur Collection is inspired by religious harmony and captures the balance between stillness and motion.

My mother is Jain, my father is Hindu, my husband is Christian. The inspiration for this piece started with my appreciation for a leader encouraging religious harmony.  As I worked through the design, I was overcome by how the patterns seemed to move into one another.

My favorite part about this collection is it evokes responses so different from my inspiration. Some say it reminds them of birds in flight. Others say a Calder mobile. I see visions of sea skates and fish skeletons when I wear them.

It reminds me we are all connected.
